Cathay Pacific Flight Crew Witnessed North Korean Missile Test
North Korea tested another ballistic missile on November 29, this past Wednesday. Unlike most nations, North Korea doesn’t give any advanced warning about its tests. Airlines have no idea when they need to change their flight paths when there is no advanced warning. The crew of Cathay Pacific flight CX893 from San Francisco to Hong Kong report seeing the missile reentering the earth’s atmosphere as they were flying over Japan.
They contacted air traffic control about the situation mid-flight. The flight was far enough from the test site to avoid being diverted. Cathay says it’s been in contact with other airlines and authorities about the situation and currently has no plans to modify its flight routes. While this type of missile has never hit a commercial jet, it could foreseeably happen when there’s no advanced warning.
