Chase Devalues IHG Credit Card Free Night Certificate
Chase is changing one of the best perks of the IHG Rewards Club Select credit card. Cardholders have traditionally earned one free night certificate per year. This could be redeemed for a free night at any of the 5,000+ IHG properties around the world. The annual certificate was a terrific value since the card only cost $49 per year and the certificate could be redeemed for a room costing hundreds of dollars.
Chase recently informed cardholders that anniversary free night certificates issued after May 1, 2018 can only be redeemed for IHG properties costing up to 40,000 points per night. IHG rooms cost between 5,000-70,000 points per night. So this eliminates the top 50% of rooms.
This is a fairly significant devaluation and neuters the card’s most valuable perk. Cardholders can still get outsized value from using the IHG Rewards Club Select, but it’s not as much of a slam dunk anymore.
