Straight to the Point
Air Canada’s frequent flyer program, Aeroplan, is running a promotion between March 13-April 17, 2017 which gives you up to 30% bonus miles when you transfer hotel points to Aeroplan.
The above hotel partners qualify for the bonus. All you have to do is login to your hotel program and transfer points to Aeroplan, there’s no registration required. The actual bonus amount is tiered and ranges from 20%-30% depending on how many points you transfer. You get the maximum 30% bonus miles when you transfer 200k+ hotel points.
You don’t have to transfer all the points at once or transfer from one hotel program. Aeroplan will track how many points you transfer from all the eligible partners and give you the bonus 4-6 weeks after the promotion ends (April 17, 2017).
Maximizing the Bonus
If you transfer 200,000 hotel points you’d ordinarily get 260,000 Aeroplan miles (30% bonus)-which is a pretty good deal.
However, remember that when you transfer 20,000 Starwood points to partner airlines, Starwood gives you an extra 5,000 miles. That means you can transfer 160,000 Starwood points and get 200,000 Aeroplan miles (20,000:25,000 transfer ratio). Since you just transferred 200k points to Aeroplan, you’d then get the extra 30% Aeroplan bonus to bring your total up to 260,000 miles. This effectively converts 160,000 Starwood points into 260,000 Aeroplan miles-pretty good deal!
Another neat option is to transfer points as part of a Marriott Hotel+Air Package. For example, you could convert 270,000 Marriott points into 120,000 Aeroplan miles while getting 7 free nights at a category 1-5 Marriott property! You’d still need to move another 80,000 hotel points to Aeroplan to hit the 200,000 point threshold for the maximum 30% Aeroplan bonus.
Redeeming Aeroplan Miles
You can find Aeroplan’s Award Chart here, which shows you roundtrip award prices. One-way prices are just half the price shown on the chart. Note that Aeroplan adds fuel charges to some airline award tickets and not to others. You can book the following airlines without fuel charges-Air China, Air New Zealand, Brussels Air, Egypt Air, EVA Air, SAS, Singapore Sir, Swiss Air, Turkish Air, and United Air. One great way to use Aeroplan miles is to fly from the US to Western Europe for 55k miles each way. If you maximize this bonus and get 260,000 Aeroplan miles, you’ll be taking a lot of free business class flights 😉
If you’re planning on spending miles for award bookings soon, this is a good way to get a lot of bonus miles in the process. However, I wouldn’t pre-emptively move points to Aeroplan without general booking ideas in mind. Once those points transfer, they can’t be transferred back. It’s generally not a good idea to tie up points for too long with any frequent flyer program.
