Etihad is Selling Champagne and Pajamas in Economy

Etihad recently started selling a number of products aimed at “enhancing the travel experience” in Economy Class on select routes. These don’t replace essential items like food and hot water like some airlines are doing (I’m looking at you British Airways), but are offered as an additional option to passengers. Here’s what’s available:


  • Paris, London, and Australian sectors in Economy- Cold brewed coffee from Coffee Planet for $4 USD
  • All long haul and ultra-long haul sectors (except the US) in Economy- Piper-Heidsieck Cuvee Brut NV champagne for $8 USD per glass
  • All ultra-long haul sectors (except the US) in all cabins- Christian Lacroix male and female branded amenity kits for $22 USD, Christian Lacroix pajamas for $35 USD, Snack Box with sweet and healthy snacks starting January 2018


I get that Etihad is struggling to make up for lost revenues over the past couple of years, and offering more choices to customers is a logical way to sell more products. But does this risk reducing the appeal of a Business or First Class experience when you can just buy pajamas, amenity kits, and champagne in Economy? What do you think.
