Hilton Offering 100% Bonus on Purchased Points Through May 3
Hilton Honors is offering a 100% bonus on purchased points now through May 3, 2017. You need to buy at least 5,000 points to qualify. Factoring in the bonus, you can effectively buy Hilton points for 0.5 cents each. If you were to max out the promo, you could buy 80,000 points (the annual maximum) for $800 and get 80,000 bonus points, bringing your total to 160,000 Hilton points. The purchase is processed by Points.com so you won’t earn any travel category credit card bonus.
Hilton overhauled its reward program last month and you can catch up on the changes here. The biggest new feature is the ability to combine points and cash for award bookings. This gives travelers much more flexibility when redeeming their points with Hilton.
If you want to earn a lot of Hilton points, you can also sign-up for the free Citi Hilton Visa Signature card. The current sign up-bonus has been increased to 75,000 Hilton points after spending $2,000 in the first three month of account opening. You can also transfer points from the Citi Thank You program to Hilton at a ratio of 1:1.5.
Should you buy?
As with most point sales, I wouldn’t recommend buying points unless you have specific redemptions in mind. If you’re planning a trip soon, go to Hilton.com and checkout the hotels in the city you’re visiting. If you can get more than 0.5 cents per point when you redeem points for your stay, then it would make sense to buy points since you end up saving money. In most cases you get the most value per point for booking high-end resorts.
How to Pay
- Chase Freedom Unlimited-Earn 1.5X Chase Ultimate Reward point per $1 on all spending.
- Starwood Preferred Guest American Express– Earn 2X Starpoints per $1 on Starwood & Marriott spending, 1 Starpoint per $1 on everything else. (Current sign-up bonus is raised to 35,000 Starpoints).
