Hotel Review: Westin Excelsior Deluxe Room in Florence

Article By:

I recently spent three nights in Florence, Italy over Columbus Day weekend. I booked my stay at the Westin Excelsior hotel, an SPG property. It’s ideally located on the banks of the Arno river and is just a 10-minute walk from the center of Florence. It’s also right across from a St. Regis hotel, another SPG property.

Check-in

I arrived at the hotel around 10:00 AM, much earlier than the normal 1:00 PM check-in time. I had indicated my early arrival time through SPG when I made the reservation, so the hotel should have expected this. The agent who handled my check-in was super friendly and hospitable. She offered me late checkout (4:00 PM) without my having to ask-which was helpful since I needed a late checkout and would have forgotten to ask. She also offered me a choice of two Deluxe rooms with different views. To help me decide, she had someone from the concierge take me to both the rooms so I could see them.

This was the view from my room. There was a partial view of the Arno river on the left side.

Room

The room itself was lovely and had elegant Italian furnishings. Westin mattresses are always comfortable, and my massive King bed didn’t disappoint.

The bathroom had a marble countertop and plenty of useful amenities. In addition to soaps, there were two pairs of Westin slippers, a scale (so you can see how much weight you’re gaining from eating Italian pasta and gelato), and a robe. There’s a full sized bathtub opposite the sink and a separate room with a toilet on the left side.

The hotel room also had a small entrance area with this cabinet and safe.

Dining

This is the main restaurant where breakfast is offered on the ground floor. Breakfast normally costs €40 here, but it drops to €25 if you’re an SPG member (anyone can create a free SPG account online). If you’re a platinum member, breakfast is free. The food was nothing particularly special. It’s the standard hotel breakfast buffet spread. There was an egg station with a chef making custom omelets etc.

I also tried the room service on two occasions. Again, the food was nothing special. It’s the standard bland hotel offerings available at all Westins. The food was delivered in under 30 minutes both times, which is appreciated.

Amenities

The gym is tucked away in a far corner of the hotel and you have to navigate through a labyrinth of rooms and stairs to get there. Once you find the gym, it’s quite disappointing, as most hotel gyms are. There’s no squat rack, no barbells, and the heaviest dumbbells are 50 lbs.

While the gym was pretty bad, the Wi-Fi was excellent. I received free ‘premium Wi-Fi’ because of my platinum status. It was consistently fast and worked throughout the hotel.

Overall I enjoyed my stay here. The food was a bit disappointing as there was nothing at all Italian about it-it was generic hotel food. The location was perfect and the service was great with every employee I interacted with.
