How to Book Cathay Pacific First Class Using Asia Miles

Article By:

Hong Kong based Cathay Pacific is often ranked one of the best airlines in the world, and their First Class product is excellent. There’s three popular ways to book Cathay Pacific First Class awards. You can book these with American Airlines miles, Alaska Airlines miles, or Cathay Pacific miles. I want to go over the nuances of booking with Cathay Pacific Asia miles in this post.

Calculate how Many Miles You Need

Cathay Pacific uses a distance based award chart, so the number of miles you need to redeem will vary based on your distance flown. Cathay has several award charts depending on how many and which partner airlines are included in your itinerary. The following chart applies for flights operated by Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, or a mixed carrier award with up to one non-Cathay airline.

You need to calculate how total miles you’re flying (including stops) to determine which award zone applies. For example, a nonstop Cathay flight from Boston-Hong Kong is 7,970 miles. This would fall into Zone E and cost 220,000 Asia miles for a roundtrip First Class award. Note that while you can book one-way awards, the the cost per segment is cheaper if you book a roundtrip itinerary. Also know that Cathay Pacific allows stopover awards. For example, you could book an award from Boston-Hong Kong, stop there for a week, then continue onward to Singapore with the same ticket.

Find Award Space

Search for award space on Just click the “Redeem Flights” tab, enter your routes, and you should see what’s available.

Book the Award Ticket

If you’re making a one-way or round-trip booking, you can book Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, and a handful of partner airline awards online. If you’re making a more complicated booking or want to book on partner airlines not eligible for online booking, you’ll have to complete an online award request form or call Cathay Pacific.
