Lufthansa is Officially Buying Parts of Air Berlin
Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy this summer and has since been reducing its flight operations. It canceled all long-haul flights a few weeks ago and will end all flights by October 28, 2017. As part of the liquidation process, Air Berlin has been trying to sell off its assets. The airline announced this morning that it accepted Lufthansa’s bid of €210 million for some of its business units.
Lufthansa is primarily acquiring Air Berlin’s Niki Luftfahrt and Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter business units. This comes shortly after Lufthansa said it would also acquire 81 jets from the failed airline. The purchase is conditional on regulatory approval. Air Berlin is still looking for bidders to buy its remaining assets.
I love Lufthansa, so I’m glad to see it’s investing in expanding its business.
