New Lufthansa Group Business Class Coming in 2020
A few days ago, Lufthansa put out a press release reminding us that it will be launching new business class seats in 2020. Little is knows about the upcoming seats and service at this time, and sadly we still don’t have pictures. We do know that Lufthansa will be taking delivery of new Boeing 777 aircraft in 2020 and those planes will be the first to feature the new seats.
Lufthansa has said it’s investing heavily in the technology of its new seats. Passengers will be able to control their seats and the in-flight entertainment wirelessly with their phones and tablets. Lufthansa executive Harry Hohmeister teased the following at IBT Berlin last week:
“This seat will be more than ‘just’ a seat. It will meet the specific needs of customers – no matter whether they prefer to work or sleep, or whether they are travelling with their families or on their own for business. You really have something to look forward to. Let us surprise you,”
Lufthansa has an interesting strategy with its new business class seat. Lufthansa, Austrian, and Swiss (all owned by the same company) are getting the same seat starting in 2020. Each airline will have its own cosmetic touches and service, but the fundamental seat will be the same across the three airlines. Lufthansa Group is doing this to streamline the business class experience across its brands and lower its investment and replacement costs.
It’s definitely time for Lufthansa to replace its aging business class seats. All major airlines are moving to a 1-2-1 configuration with direct aisle access for every seat while Lufthansa still operates a 2-2-2 configuration. Last week we wrote about Qatar’s new QSuite business class, which offers double beds and a four person ‘living room’ starting in June 2017. Qatar’s already upgrading its business class, which is already 1-2-1, while Lufthansa is waiting until 2020. Let’s hope they’ve got something great in the works!
While Lufthansa’s business class is outdated at this point, I have to say I still love its first class seats and service 😉
