New Marriott Portal lets you Earn and Redeem Points for Online Shopping
Marriot just launched its first online shopping portal, called Marriott Rewards MORE. While the new portal has some similarities to traditional shopping portals, there are some significant differences. Marriott rewards remembers can use the portal to earn bonus Marriott points for shopping at various online retailers, but they can also redeem Marriott points or a combination of Marriott points and cash for online purchases at those retailers. Here’s how it works:
You first have to install a Marriott Rewards More browser extension in order to earn and redeem points. The website will prompt you to add it when you click on a retailer. The amount of points you earn per $1 spent varies by retailer. As of now, it’s ranging from a low of 2X points per $1 on Amazon to a high of 8X points per $1 on Petco purchases. Marriott members will earn an additional 1,000 points after their first purchase of $25+. Customers who pay with a Marriott Rewards credit card will earn an extra 25% bonus points on every transaction.
I installed the Safari extension and added a pair of Bose headphones to my Amazon cart to test this out. As you can see, the extension sits on top of the retailer’s website and shows you how many points you have available, how much cash you can redeem those points for, and how many points you’ll earn if you pay cash for your purchase.
When I went to checkout, there was an option to pay with Marriott points. At that point, the extension changes to allow you to select how many points you want to redeem. Marriott is offering 0.37 cents per point here, which is a horrible rate. Do NOT redeem Marriott points at that rate. Here’s a quick video from Marriott summarizing how all this works:
The Marriot Rewards MORE portal is initially only available in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. You can access the portal through a desktop or the new Marriott Rewards More app. This is a great opportunity to earn additional bonus points for online shopping, though you won’t be getting a good value if you decide to redeem points. Keep in mind that you can also transfer points from Marriott to SPG at a 3:1 ratio. So this can indirectly earn you SPG points as well.
