Qatar Announces New WiFi, QSuite Routes, and More!
Qatar Airways made several announcements at Arabian Travel Market today. Qatar will be the first Middle-Eastern airline to launch hi-speed broadband Wi-Fi. The airline says the upgraded service will allow customers to stream videos and browse the internet just like they’d be able to on the ground. So you should theoretically be able to get your Netflix and YouTube fix while in the air! The new Wi-Fi will begin implementation this summer.
Qatar also announced an upgraded new smartphone app called Oryx One to use in conjunction with the in flight entertainment system. You can use the app to browse through thousands of movies and TV shows, which you can watch in the plane, before you even board the flight. Business Traveller is also reporting that business class passengers will be able to compile a viewing list and transfer it to the in flight entertainment system wirelessly using NFC (Near Field Communication). Qatar CEO Akbar Al Baker said: “Seamless connectivity is part of our passenger’s lifestyle requirements on the ground and is fast becoming a minimum expectation for travel in the air.”
Qatar also confirmed that its new QSuite business class seats, which can turn into four-person living rooms and offer double beds, will first launch on flights from Doha-London, Paris, and New York. The first retrofits will begin this June, and the rest of the fleet will be upgraded about one plane per month.
