Review: IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card
The IHG hotel chain operates predominantly low-end to mid-tier hotel brands with a couple luxury brands thrown in. Candlewood Suites, Staybridge Suites, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Hualuxe, EVEN Hotels, Hotel Indigo, Kimpton, and InterContinental all fall under the IHG umbrella. While the IHG rewards program isn’t quite as useful as Marriott & SPG, travelers can easily get enough value from the IHG credit card to justify adding it to their portfolio.
The IHG Rewards Club Select credit cad from Chase comes with 60,000 IHG points after spending $1,000 in the first three months of account opening. You can earn an additional 5,000 points after adding your first authorized user and making a purchase with the authorized user card in the same three months.
Cardholders earn 5x points per $1 spent at IHG hotels, 2x points per $1 spent at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants, and 1x point per $1 on everything else.
You can redeem IHG points for free stays at IHG hotels around the world. Redemption prices range from 10,000-70,000 points per night depending on the hotel category. You can also redeem a combination of points & cash for your award booking.
Anniversary Free Night
This credit card’s biggest selling point is the free anniversary night certificate. Cardholders get one free night certificate each year which can be redeemed at 5,000+ IHG properties around the world. Chase recently informed cardholders that anniversary free night certificates issued after May 1, 2018 can only be redeemed for IHG properties costing up to 40,000 points per night. IHG rooms cost between 5,000-70,000 points per night.
Platinum Elite Status
Cardholders automatically receive Platinum Elite status. This comes with perks like complimentary room upgrades, late check-out, priority check-in, complimentary internet, a dedicated phone line to call, 50% bonus points for stays and more!
10% Rebate on Redemptions
Cardholders get a 10% rebate on point redemptions, up to 100,000 points back each year.
The IHG Rewards Select has a $0 annual fee the first year, then it’s $49 per year. It has no foreign transaction fees.
Should You Get It?
This card can benefit anyone who stays at least one night a year at a hotel. Cardholders can redeem the annual certificate for a room that costs more than $49, effectively getting their money back for the $49 annual fee.
Of course you’ll get even more value if you visit IHG hotels often. Complimentary Platinum Elite status is a terrific perk and the 10% redemption rebate is essentially the same as a 10% discount on award bookings. The 60,000 point sign-up bonus is also attractive since you earn if after spending just $1,000.
