Sale: Buy Starpoints for 35% Off through May 2018
Starwood is back with its popular 35% off promotion. The hotel chain is offering a 35% discount on SPG points when you purchase between 5,000-30,000 points. The offer is available now through May 1, 2018.
Starpoints arguably became even more valuable after Marriott announced its new unified loyalty program last week. SPG points will automatically be converting to Marriott points on August 1, 2018 at a 1:3 ratio. The combined loyalty program will have an astronomical 45 airline transfer partners, offering a huge range of opportunities to use these points.
Maxing out the promo would bring the cost per point down to 2.275 cents each. Does it make sense to buy Starpoints at this price? It depends. You can get far more value than 2.2275 cents per point when redeeming Starpoints for international First Class flights. For example, you can transfer 40,000 points to Asiana and book a one-way ticket in Lufthansa First Class between North American and Europe. That ticket normally sells for $8,000+ if you pay cash.
Also keep in mind that American Airlines is offering a 25% bonus when you transfer hotel points to the airline by May 31, 2018. You can transfer points to American at a 1:1.56 ratio by maximizing SPG’s transfer bonuses. This can be an indirect way to acquire cheap AA miles.
The usual Starwood purchase restrictions apply. You can purchase a maximum of 30,000 SPG points per year and your account must be active for at least 14 days.
