Sale: Buy United Miles for 1.88 Cents Through September 2017

United announced a new sale for its miles yesterday. Per an email sent to its MileagePlus members, United is selling miles with up to a 100% bonus now through September 12, 2017. The promotion is tiered according how many miles you buy.

  • Buy 5,000-14,000 miles, get a 25% bonus
  • Buy 15,000-29,000 miles, get a 50% bonus
  • Buy 30,000-49,000 miles, get a 75% bonus
  • Buy 50,000-75,000 miles, get a 100% bonus

You need to purchase a minimum of 50,000 miles to get the 100% bonus. That would get you 100,000 miles for $1,881.25 (when you factor in taxes), bringing the cost per mile down to 1.88 cents. Keep in mind that you can purchase a maximum of 150,000 United miles per year and it could take up to 48 hours for the miles to post to your account.

It’s generally not a good idea to purchase miles and hoard them over the long term, as airlines frequently devalue their award programs. United announced its latest devaluation about a month ago. The good news is that the devaluation won’t kick in until November 1, 2017 and it looks pretty minor, with an average 5,000-10,000 point increase on certain saver level awards.

If you have a specific award you’re looking to book in the near future, 1.88 cents per point is a solid price for United miles. You can typically redeem United miles for far more value when booking premium award tickets on partner airlines. For example, 70,000 United miles could get you a Business Class seat on Swiss Air between the U.S. and Europe while 110,000 United miles could get you a flight on Lufthansa First Class, complete with caviar, Porsche rides, and Lufthansa rubber duckies!
