Sale: Purchase Alaska Miles with a 50% Bonus (1.97 Cents per Mile)
Savy travelers often use Alaska Airlines’ frequent flyer program to book partner Business and First class award tickets. That’s because Alaska lets you book awards on tons of great airlines and offers some of the lowest redemption rates in the industry. For example, you can book international Cathay Pacific First Class or Japan Airlines First Class between North American and Asia for just 70,000 Alaska miles. They charge very reasonable rates for domestic US awards as well. Alaska even allows you to book stopovers on one-way award tickets.
Alaska Mileage Plan is currently offering up to a 50% bonus on purchased Alaska miles. This can be a great way to buy miles cheaply and redeem them for expensive tickets. The bonus is available now through July 13, 2018 so there’s no rush to jump in. It’s applied in the following tiers:
- Purchase 10,000-19,000 miles and receive a 20% bonus
- Purchase between 20,000-39,000 miles and receive a 35% bonus
- Purchase between 40,000-60,000 miles and receive a 50% bonus
The bonus percentage and the number of miles required to unlock the bonus appears to vary based on your individual Mileage Plan account. Many users report seeing up to a 40% bonus while my account was targeted with 50%.
Your cost per mile drops to 1.97 cents if you max out the sale and purchase between 40,000-60,000 miles. While Alaska only lets you purchase 60,000 miles at a time, the airline has no annual cap on the number of miles you can purchase. This means you can buy as many bundles of 60,000 miles you want. The only caveat is that your account must be open for at least 10 days before you can purchase miles. The sale is processed by Points.com (not Alaska Airlines directly) so you won’t earn any travel spending bonus on your credit card.
