Scheduling Error Leaves Thousands of AA Flights with No Pilot
An American Airlines system error allowed too many pilots to take vacation time off at the same time. With the holidays fast approaching, employees naturally chose to take time off in December. This has left over 15,000 American Airlines flights scheduled between December 17-31, 2017 without a pilot!
The airline is offering up to 150% of hourly pay to encourage pilots to work on the affected dates. An American spokesman said the airline is “working diligently to address the issue and expects to avoid cancellations.” The Allied Pilots Associations, which represents thousands of AA employees, says American first informed them of the situation on Friday.
Hopefully American can fix this before the holiday travel rush. Ryanair faced a similar nightmare scenario in September when it had to cancel flights for 400,000 passengers. Ryanair had also given too much vacation time to its pilots become of a system error.
