Starwood is Ending its Partnership with Uber
One of the most convenient perks of Starwood membership is earning SPG points for Uber rides. Members used to earn one Starpoint per $1 spent on Uber rides everywhere and 2-4 Starpoints per $1 spent on Uber rides during an SPG stay. Back in January 2017, points earnings were slashed down to one Starpoint per $2 spent on Uber everywhere and two Starpoints per $1 spent during an SPG stay. Sadly, Starwood will soon discontinue this program.
Starwood will no longer award points for Uber rides after 11:59 PM EST on December 17, 2017. We don’t have any information on why this change is being made. I suspect is partially due to Marriott acquiring Starwood and the two companies working to merge their rewards programs.
Another factor could be Uber’s desire to increase customer loyalty through the use of Uber credits. The new Uber Visa Card is launching next week, Uber has a partnership with Visa Local Offers to award credits for everyday shopping, and the Platinum Card from American Express offers $200 annual Uber credits. Regardless, this is a huge blow to the way we earn Starpoints.
