Straight to the Point

The personal and business Starwood Preferred Guest credit cards from American Express have both increased their sign-up bonuses to 35,000 SPG points when you apply now through April 5, 2017. This is their largest sign-up bonus ever!

Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card (Personal)

  • You’ll earn the standard 25,000 bonus points upon spending $3,000 in the first three months of account opening.
  • You’ll earn another 10,000 points upon spending an additional $2,000 in the first six months of account opening.
  • No annual fee for the first year, then $95 a year.

You can find my full review of the SPG AMEX card here. The main highlights are that you earn 2X SPG points per $1 spent at Starwood and Marriott properties and you get credit for 5 nights & 2 stays per year towards SPG elite status.

Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card (Business)

The SPG business credit card is a completely separate product from the personal card, which mean you can have both as long as the business card is for some type of business use.

  • You’ll earn the standard 25,000 bonus points upon spending $5,000 in the first three months of account opening.
  • You’ll earn another 10,000 points upon spending an addition $3,000 in the first six months of account opening.
  • No annual fee for the first year, then $95 a year.

The main perks of this card are that you earn 2X SPG points per $1 spent at Starwood and Marriott properties, you get credit for 5 nights & 2 stays per year towards SPG elite status, and you have access to the Club Lounge at Sheraton hotels.

SPG Starpoints

SPG points are the most valuable reward currency in the travel world right now. They can be transferred to 36 partner airlines at a 1:1 ratio in most cases. And when you transfer 20,000 points you get a 5,000 point transfer bonus. You can also move SPG points between Starwood and Marriott at a 1:3 ratio, unlocking a huge inventory of hotel rooms for award bookings. For example, you can transfer the 35,000 Starpoints to Marriott and receive 105,000 Marriott points! You can find my guide to maximizing Starpoints here.

Should you apply?

As I said, I personally love Starpoints because they can be transferred to so many airlines and because when you transfer 20,000 miles you get a 5,000 mile bonus. These cards are also great if you’re chasing Starwood elite status as the elite qualifying nights & stays stack together. So, if you have both cards you’ll receive a credit of 4 stays and & 10 nights towards elite status! 35,000 points matches the highest sign-up bonus we’ve ever seen for these cards. If you can meet the spending requirements, this is a great way to earn a lot of extra Starpoints!
