The Benefits of United Status-Silver, Gold, Platinum, 1K

Straight to the Point

Deciding whether or not to pursue any airline status depends on a number of factors including how often you fly, how much you send annually on flights, which city you live in, and how much subjective value you place on frequent flyer perks. When looking at United’s status perks, I’d say that if you can at least hit Gold status by concentrating your flights on Star Alliance, the benefits could be worth it. The Silver perks really aren’t compelling enough to divert spending away from other frequent flyer programs.

Earning Status through Partner Airlines

  • United is one of 28 members of Star Alliance and as such you can earn PQM, PQS, and PQD by flying on partner airlines. However, there is an important caveat you must know. While you will earn PQM and PQS if you book a flight on a partner’s website and credit it to United’s frequent flyer program you will not earn PQD for that flight because it’s not ticketed by United. If you want to fly on a Star Alliance partner, I’d recommend you book the partner ticket through United’s website. That way you will get PQD for the money you’re spending on the ticket.
