United Closing Newark Club to Make Way for Polaris Lounge
United has plans to build a network of nine Polaris lounges around the world. These are nothing like United Clubs and are actually on par with many premium international Business Class lounges. You can check out my review of the first Polaris lounge in Chicago here. The buildout of these lounge has been painfully slow. United expects to open locations in San Francisco (SFO), Newark (EWR), and London (LHR) sometime in 2018.
The airline is closing the United Club at Newark (EWR) near Gate C120 on November 7, 2017 in order to convert it into a Polaris lounge. United says the Polaris lounge will open in summer 2018, though I wouldn’t put too much faith in that timeframe. Given how busy United Clubs are at Newark, the airline will also stop accepting one-time United Club passes at its Terminal C lounges until summer 2018. This is to prioritize customers with United Club memberships, though I doubt this will make much of a difference.
This means United will only have two Clubs open at Newark for the time being-one near Gate C74 and one in Terminal A. Interestingly, United says it’s also opening a ‘pop-up’ United club near Gate C124 which will serve beer, wine, and light snacks. I have no idea what a ‘pop-up’ lounge is.
