Week in Review: June 24, 2018

Article By:

I want to start posting weekly articles about three topics. The first will cover the main stories in the world of miles & points (and travel in general) that happened during the week. The second will highlight any reviews I’ve published that week. The third will be a brief update of my recent travel adventures. Expect to see these posts every Sunday going forward. If you have any suggestions or comments, I’d love to read about it down below. And with that, let’s get started!

Weekly Miles, Points, & Travel News

Alaska Airlines began selling frequent fliers miles with up to a 50% bonus this week. The bonus is targeted and varies on a case by case basis, so you’ll have to login to your account to see your bonus. The 50% offer brings the cost per mile down to 1.97 cents. This is a great way to purchase miles at a discount with the goal of booking Business & First Class travel. The sale is valid through July 13, 2018.

Smart technology continued advancing through the travel industry as Marriott partnered with Amazon to begin testing “Virtual Butlers”. Marriott will install Alexa enabled Echo devices in select hotels this summer. Customers can speak to the device to request things like housekeeping and room service and to change the room’s lights, temperature, TV settings, and more.

Norwegian Airlines began selling tickets for its first commercial flight between Canada and Europe. The low cost airline will begin flying between Toronto and Dublin in March 2019.

Reviews

I published a hotel review of the Hilton DoubleTree Morrison in Dublin from my stay in early June. It ended up earning a cumulative ranking of 7.5/10. I also published a review of Aer Lingus Economy from Dublin to Boston which earned a cumulative ranking of 6.7/10.

What I’m Up To

I spent the first half of the week in Verbier, Switzerland. It was an absolutely wonderful trip. There were very few people around since Verbier was still in low season. This made for a very relaxing experience. I spent my time hiking the Alps, paragliding for the first time, and eating delicious Swiss food.

Then I took two flights from Geneva to Addis Ababa to Mahe, Seychelles. I transferred 55,000 miles from my Chase account to United airlines to book these Business Class flights on Ethiopian airlines. I’m having a great time in the Seychelles so far. I actually went scuba diving for the first time this morning!
